Squirrels  Class

Welcome back to Squirrels’ class. I hope that everyone has had a fantastic Summer break and is ready for the fun and challenges of the year ahead.

This term sees squirrels travel back to World War 1, as we look to answer the learning challenge question-World war 1-was it really a great war?. We will visit the trenches and find out what life was like for those fighting in the war. We will also look at the role of those left behind and the significant role that animals played in battles. We will make poppies from plastic battles and cover the room with them and try to create our own trenches as we engage in a battle of our own.

Our main writing focus will be letter writing and we will develop this through our talk for writing programme, allowing the pupils to really absorb the process and skills and apply them to their own work. For our talk for writing we will be using the book Speckle the Spider.

Alongside this, our science topics will be animals, classification and food chains.. We will look at how animals develop, the different groups of animals on the planet and the dangers they face from us.

In maths, we will initially be focusing on place value and really securing our knowledge and understanding of this. We will then continue on to addition and subtraction, developing mental skills and then formal written methods. As always times tables will play an extremely important role in our maths and it would be greatly appreciated if children could spend time learning these, not just by memory as a song but inside out and back to front as well. All of these skills will come into play as we move onto calculations. It will be a busy maths term.
