Happy New Year and welcome back to a new term.
Our topic this half term is ‘Who sailed the seven seas?’
Over the next few weeks we will be completing many different activities based around pirates. In English, we will be creating ‘wanted’ posters, writing a diary entry for a day in the life of a pirate and writing poems.
In maths we are concentrating on subtraction, number bonds, multiplication and division. We will also think about language for directions when we use the beebots (a programmable toy) and will look at 3D shapes when we explore and make different ‘treasure’.
Our key curriculum area for this topic is science. We will be doing lots of work on describing and sorting materials. Children will be digging up treasure in our sandpit and will be thinking about what the treasure is made from. We will think about the suitability of each material and will use this knowledge to design an outfit for a pirate. Children will then complete a floating and sinking investigation.
Towards the end of the half term, the children will be designing and making a bandana or neck chief, which the children will then wear when we have a dressing up pirate party at the end of the half term! We hope to do this with KS1 at The Norman School and Weeting, as they are also learning about pirates.
We still have 2 PE lessons a week, although the days have slightly changed. Children will now have PE on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that children have the correct kit in school on these days and any earrings have been taken out before they come to school. Please can you ensure children have their hair tied back if it is long enough and that earrings are taken out or taped up.
Please ensure that your child’s name is in all of the clothing that they wear at school. It can get quite hot in the classroom when we are working hard and the children often take their jumpers off. It can make it extremely tricky to get the correct jumper to each child if they haven’t got names in them. Thank you in advance.
Our new homework is starting this week and will be of a similar format to the previous term. Please can you encourage your child to complete one task each week. There are more tasks than there are weeks so your child is welcome to complete all of the tasks over the few weeks if they are keen to do more.
